Drugs and Alcohol Affect Children in School

Our community has a problem. Many youth have access to drugs and alcohol at extremely early ages.

In Dane County, 31 percent of seventh and eighth graders tried alcohol in the last 12 months. Tackling the dynamics between Northside youth, drugs and alcohol is challenges our schools, after school programs and homes.

We hope to encourage healing and prevention in the Northside. Success stories of a school intervention for families crippled by addiction do exist.  read more »

The ‘Software’ of Hardware: Stores Programmed for Customer Satisfaction

Matt Dorn enjoys a family history of retail. His grandfather opened a grocery store in Madison in 1912. His father Vic grew up in that business. He then went on to establish six hardware stores in Dane County including the Dorn True Value in the Northgate Shopping Center. Today, Matt Dorn owns and manages these hardware stores and can often be found at the Northgate store.  read more »

Start Lacing up Your Walkin’ Shoes and ‘Pound the Pavement’

Just around the corner is Saturday, Aug. 25. We’ll be ‘Pounding the Pavement’ for a pool again this year.

The event, sponsored by Warner Park’s Circle of Friends, takes place annually. Supporters “stroll” around Warner Park to raise dollars and awareness for Madison’s second pool, slated to be at Warner Park. Last year, the event raised $6,414 with 18 teams and 435 individual walkers.  read more »

Greener Lake View Hill

Two enhancements to Lake View Hill Park’s ground maintenance plan are being piloted this year. The changes follow lengthy consideration by the Friends of Lake View Hill Park, discussions with Dane County Parks personnel and contractors, and a public hearing last August.

Reduced Mowing

Portions of the lawn near the old chapel west of the park are being allowed to grow out, for eventual restoration to oak savannah prairie.  read more »
