"This is a need that has been left off the radar," Christine Thompson says simply. As coordinator of Zion Lutheran's Personal Essentials Pantry, she has seen how huge the need is for items like dish soap, laundry detergent, personal care and hygiene items. People on food stamps don't get money for these things. Food pantries are limited by shelf space and donations in what they can provide. Personal care items are a "blind spot" in most social service planning, with agencies placing greater emphasis on food, clothing, and shelter.  read more »

Eight Arrested In Darbo, Worthington Sting

Police arrested eight people for suspected drug-related and other crimes last week during an undercover sting operation in the Darbo/Worthington neighborhood off East Washington Avenue on Madison's East Side.

The investigation on Thursday night by Madison's North-East Community Policing Team and the Dane County Narcotics and Gang Task Force was prompted by complaints about short-term traffic in the area, police said.  read more »

East-siders: Cops Not Only Fix

Madison east-siders want their City Council representatives to understand that more police officers alone will not make their neighborhoods safer.

Neighborhood officers and the rapport developed between police and the community when an officer is focused on a single neighborhood are effective, residents said Tuesday at a community assembly sponsored by the East Isthmus Neighborhoods Planning Council. But the value of other law enforcement efforts must be weighed against the effectiveness of preventive measures, they said.  read more »
